Mirena coil - new licence for extended use

Earlier in 2024 the licence for the use of an individual Mirena coil was extended to 8 years, if being used for contraception alone. If you have a Mirena coil (progesterone hormone coil) then please be aware that if you are using it purely for contraception, you can leave it in for 8 years now and have it changed after this time, rather than the 5 years which was the previous advice.

If you are using the coil for other reasons such as for part of HRT, then it still needs to be changed after 5 years.
